It was two years ago today, on March 7, 2008 that overwhelmingly supportive crowds gathered at the Beattie Homes Office in Douglasdale for our “Head Shave Event” to benefit both the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and the Kids Cancer Care Foundation. Everyone was dressed in their bright red “Shave your Lid” t-shirts sponsored by Beattie homes; would you believe that more than 60 people shaved their heads or donated their locks to make wigs for those who had lost their hair frome chemotherapy and other illnesses? Wow.
I would like to say thanks today, for those that came out to the event in support of not only two great charities, but also for my dad who was diagnosed shorty before (in January 2008) with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Not only did people donate an amazing amount of money, or donate all of their hair, there were the hairstylists that donated their time to help us out by shaving heads and triming afterwards, and also the time that Beattie staff spent organizing such a successful event. All in all, over $630,000 was raised.
I would also like to personally thank my colleagues at the Children’s Hospital in Emergency for joining in shaving your heads or cutting your locks, and supporting me, as it was an emotionally big deal for me to donate 10 inches of hair, and shave the rest off, and it meant alot to have YOU along side for a fun and charitable day. Thank you all.
With the funds raised from this event (as well as ongoing Beattie events and donations from the public), an endowment fund was set up as requested by my dad to provide financial assistance to families going through similar chemo treatments. You can read more about it on the Beattie Homes website.
And as today marks two years since this event, I would encourage everyone reading this blog to make a donation, whether big or small to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Follow the link ABOVE to donate to a great cause.
